Kashmir Under Lock-down| No internet access

The Kashmir issue has been an ongoing conflict between Pakistan and India for over seven decades. Both the countries are fighting over a disputed territory called Jammu and Kashmir and they have fought three wars over this land. The recent actions by the Indian government have been by far the most far-reaching political move on the disputed region in nearly 70 years.

The Indian government revoked the special status of Kashmir in its constitution and has put the area under lockdown. Hence the people of Kashmir have no access to internet or any social media platform or even their mobile phone services. The 8 million people of Kashmir have lost communication with the rest of the world. According to UN, the people of Kashmir were to be given the right to choose between accession to India or Pakistan. The plebiscite was never held and they have been forced to join India against their will.

Many politicians have shown their concern regarding the lockdown. They feel like once the lockdown is lifted the population of Kashmir will start rebelling and Indian government will require to use force to put them down. This can result in another war between Pakistan and India but this time it won't be a conventional war but it can rather escalate into a nuclear war because both the countries hold nuclear power. And if two countries get into a nuclear war the consequences go way far beyond the borders.

  1. The problem with the territory that officially is a part of a country with a different culture is one of the toughest in the modern world. I think the only way to keep it safe and to avoid a war is to admit that the territory is independent. Unfortunately, I am not sure that politicians will ever agree with that.
