Importance of Culture in Social Media

Freberg in her book “Social Media for Strategic Communication,” says that for a person working as a social media professional it is very important to take into account where they work best before choosing an agency. She talks about large social media agencies, boutique social media agencies and small business agencies. One point that stood out for me was her emphasis on the culture of whatever agency one chooses. It is important for a person to have a healthy environment to work in. An environment that will help them grow, learn and create their best work.

It is said a flower can’t bloom in toxic soil. It holds true for humans too. The best working environment for a person where he can be productive is a place that provides them with healthy competition and positive criticism instead of condescending feedback. This holds true for the social media platforms that we choose to work on too. I have been writing on Wordpress for a few years now. Although most of my followers don’t know me but we have made a small community of writers where we comment on and appreciate each other’s work. Mostly the people in my circle of friends write about recovery. Some of them are recovering from a loved one’s death while others are recovering from depression and alcoholism, and their path of recovery isn’t linear. They come to Wordpress because they know there is no judgement there. It is a healthy environment for them to talk about their struggles and recovery. Hence, culture and environment does play a great role in productivity and well-being of a person whether he’s a social media professional or a young, inexperienced blogger.
